Daily brief · 2026-10-26
Nuclear decoupled from Friday's chip-tape bounce and drifted broadly lower, with SMR developers and uranium miners red, enCore Energy the standout decliner, and a thin Japanese forging ADR the only name of size in the green.
The leader was Japan Steel Works' ADR (JPSWY), up 1.6% to $20.69 in its most recent home session on the large-forgings-and-heavy-components chokepoint — the ultra-heavy pressure-vessel and rotor forging capacity that is one of the hardest physical bottlenecks in new reactor construction. This was a thin ADR move on Tokyo's own calendar, not a US-tape event, and it barely led a basket that otherwise drifted lower: nuclear decoupled from Friday's modest semiconductor bounce (the SOX rose 0.44% to 10,779.46 after Thursday's 6.7% drop) and traded as a stand-alone risk-off group, with the S&P 500 off 0.52% to 7,623.68 and the Dow down 1.23%.
The laggard was enCore Energy (EU), down 9.1% to $0.70 on the uranium-supply chokepoint — a high-beta in-situ-recovery micro-cap with no company print on the tape. The move was a continuation of its slide into penny territory rather than a reaction to news, and it was by far the sharpest decline in the basket, three times the next-worst name.
The structural rungs were uniformly soft. The SMR-and-advanced-reactor platforms — the vertical's highest-multiple names — led the downside: NuScale (SMR) flat at $5.38, Oklo (OKLO) −2.4% to $26.35 and NANO Nuclear (NNE) −3.0% to $12.16. The uranium-mining-and-supply rung was broadly red: Cameco (CCJ) −0.4% to $78.60, Uranium Energy (UEC) −1.7% to $7.35 and Energy Fuels (UUUU) −2.2% to $7.52, though the physical-uranium and miner funds held up — Sprott Physical Uranium (SRUUF) +1.2% to $18.55, the Sprott Uranium Miners ETF (URNM) +0.6% to $41.79 and NexGen (NXE) +0.6% to $8.15 — a sign the weakness was in the equities, not the commodity. The enrichment-and-HALEU rung softened too, Centrus (LEU) −1.6% to $102.45, while the heavy-component and fuel names were mixed: Curtiss-Wright (CW) −2.0% to $464.94, BWX Technologies (BWXT) −0.1% to $127.19 and the instrumentation-and-services read Fluor (FLR) +1.5% to $44.05.
The calendar sharpens over the next six weeks. BWX Technologies reports Q3 on November 2 and NANO Nuclear gives its fiscal year-end update November 15. The deeper catalysts cluster at year-end: the NRC's 18-month review milestone on the Xe-100 construction permit (December 16), the Bulgaria Kozloduy AP1000 final investment decision (expected by December 31), and the definitive Westinghouse/US-government agreements that replace the earlier binding term sheet, also targeted for year-end — the events that would convert the enrichment and fuel-fabrication straits from policy into orders. Until those land, the SMR platform rung stays the group's beta and the physical-uranium funds its floor.
