Daily brief · 2026-10-20

The nuclear-fuel and SMR complex sat out the semiconductor rebound, with the enrichment and heavy-forgings rungs the session's clearest drags.

The leader was Lightbridge (LTBR), up 3.8% to $5.41 — a thin, speculative bounce on the advanced-fuel rung with no confirmed session catalyst ahead of its third-quarter results on November 2. On a day the broad chip complex rebounded and risk rotated toward semiconductors, the nuclear-fuel and reactor-platform complex was largely left out, so the biggest gainers were the smallest, least-liquid names; Solstice Advanced Materials (SOLS) added 2.1% to $60.47, ATI (ATI) 2.0% to $189.28 and X-Energy (XE) 1.7% to $10.54 on the same low-conviction bid.

The laggard was The Japan Steel Works' ADR (JPSWY), down 5.7% to $20.91 on the large-forgings-and-heavy-components chokepoint — the single supplier of the ultra-large reactor pressure-vessel forgings the restart and new-build pipeline depends on. The move reflects its Tokyo line's most recent session on a thinly traded US ADR, not a dated disclosure, so read it as home-market drift rather than a change in the forgings bottleneck, which remains as tight as ever.

The structural soft spot was the fuel cycle. Centrus Energy (LEU) fell 4.2% to $110.12 on the enrichment-and-HALEU rung, giving back part of a very large run — the enrichment bottleneck, underscored by its September HALEU supply agreement with Antares, is still the heart of the bull case even on a down day. The uranium-supply rung slid with Energy Fuels (UUUU) −3.7% to $8.16 and enCore (EU) −3.6% to $0.7974, while the SMR-and-platform rung was broadly red: Oklo (OKLO) −2.6% to $27.24, NuScale (SMR) −2.4% to $5.69, against NANO Nuclear (NNE) +1.0% to $13.01 and NexGen (NXE) +1.6% to $8.50. The utility rung tracked the power complex lower — Constellation (CEG) −3.0% to $263.19 — while Cameco (CCJ) eased 1.0% to $80.70 and BWX Technologies (BWXT) 0.9% to $135.83.

The dated catalysts cluster at year-end on the platform and policy rungs. BWXT reports third-quarter results November 2; the Xe-100 construction permit hits its NRC 18-month review milestone December 16; and the December 31 window holds both the Westinghouse/US-government definitive agreements and Bulgaria's Kozloduy AP1000 final investment decision. Further out, the Russian LEU import waivers terminate January 1, 2028 — the policy backstop under the domestic enrichment thesis that LEU and the HALEU rung are built on. Until those prints, the complex will keep trading risk appetite, and on Monday that appetite went to chips.
