The SMR and enrichment pure-plays deleveraged hard in a rate-repricing risk-off, while cash-flowing utilities and a Japanese forging name held the line.
The leader was The Japan Steel Works' ADR (JPSWY), up 7.8% to $22.18 on its latest Tokyo session — the forgings-and-components chokepoint, where JSW is one of the few shops able to forge large reactor pressure-vessel sections. There was no single disclosed catalyst behind the move; it sits with firmer Japanese heavy-industry tape and stands out mainly because it bucked an otherwise red board. The other green marks were defensive or physical: the forgings peers Huntington Ingalls (HII) +1.8% to $272.00 and Curtiss-Wright (CW) +0.2% to $502.32, and on the fuel-cycle side Sprott Physical Uranium (SRUUF) +2.5% to $18.81 and Silex (SILXY) +3.8% to $12.90.
The laggard was Centrus Energy (LEU), down 9.5% to $114.94 — the HALEU-enrichment chokepoint and the single most crowded expression of the fuel-cycle trade. It fell alongside the entire pre-revenue SMR rung: X-Energy (XE) −9.5% to $10.36, Oklo (OKLO) −6.8% to $27.97, NuScale (SMR) −5.2% to $5.83 and NANO Nuclear (NNE) −5.2% to $12.88. These are long-duration, capex-heavy names valued on reactors that do not yet exist; a hotter September inflation print and the higher-for-longer repricing behind it hit them hardest. The structural read is that the market sold the promise rung — enrichment capacity and SMR platforms still years from cash — not the fuel cycle's fundamentals.
The split down the middle of the vertical was the session's real signal. The cash-flowing restart-and-utility rung held: Public Service Enterprise (PEG) +1.8% to $71.49, NextEra (NEE) +1.1% to $79.80, Talen (TLN) +0.3% to $354.81, with Constellation (CEG) −1.3% to $271.37 and Vistra (VST) −1.4% to $152.02 only modestly lower. The uranium miners softened — Cameco (CCJ) −2.1% to $81.52, Denison (DNN) −3.4% to $2.28, Uranium Energy (UEC) −3.2% to $7.91 — even as physical uranium caught a bid. BWX Technologies (BWXT), the diversified fuel-and-components anchor, was essentially flat at −0.1% to $137.01.
The calendar hardens quickly. BWXT reports Q3 on November 2 and NANO Nuclear on November 15; the Xe-100 construction permit hits its NRC 18-month review milestone December 16. Year-end also carries the Bulgaria Kozloduy AP1000 final investment decision and the definitive Westinghouse/US-government agreements. Those are the catalysts that could re-rate the SMR and enrichment rungs the market just sold — and until the rate picture settles, that rung stays the vertical's highest-beta risk, with the utilities as ballast.
