Daily brief · 2026-09-03
Utilities and SMR platforms led on data-center load while Silex and BWXT gave back on the fuel-cycle chokepoints.
Vistra (VST) led the basket, up 3.9% to $143.46, as the restart-and-utility chokepoint stayed the market's preferred way to own the AI power thesis. The case is the one that keeps compounding: Q2 adjusted EBITDA up 31% to $1.77B, reaffirmed full-year guidance of $6.8–7.6B, and structural ERCOT load growth of 5–6% a year driven by data centers, on top of a ~$1B commitment to its Helix digital-infrastructure platform and supply deals tied to Meta, AWS and an NVIDIA-backed venture. Vistra owns dispatchable, carbon-free baseload — including its nuclear fleet — which is the scarcest input in the buildout, and it trades as the cleanest public proxy for that strait.
The decliner sat on the fuel cycle. Silex Systems' ADR (SILXY) fell 5.4% to $17.39, the worst in the basket, a pullback in the enrichment-and-HALEU name with no fresh adverse headline. Silex holds 51% of Global Laser Enrichment alongside Cameco, and its SILEX laser process — with the proposed Paducah facility and rights to re-enrich DOE tails — is the third-generation enrichment chokepoint the vertical maps. After a strong run on that story, the session read as profit-taking rather than a change in the fundamentals.
The reactor-platform and utility complex was broadly bid around Vistra: NuScale (SMR) +3.8% to $9.56 and Oklo (OKLO) +2.6% to $39.52 on the SMR-platform chokepoint, Constellation (CEG) +3.5% to $290.04 and Talen (TLN) +2.8% to $302.03 on restarts and uprates, and NexGen (NXE) +2.9% to $10.22 on uranium supply. The soft side was the heavy-components and instrumentation end: BWX Technologies (BWXT) −3.6% to $155.67, a give-back after Wednesday's ~5% pop on the U.S. Army's Fort Campbell microreactor selection and a Wells Fargo upgrade, and Curtiss-Wright (CW) −2.8% to $561.53 on the forgings-and-outage-services chokepoint.
The calendar tightens next week. The World Nuclear Symposium convenes in London September 9–11, the industry's set-piece for fuel-cycle and utility news. On enrichment specifically, the NRC's final Environmental Impact Statement for GLE's Paducah Laser Enrichment Facility is expected around quarter-end — the regulatory gate under today's Silex laggard. BWXT hosts an Investor Day on September 29 and reports Q3 on November 2, the next hard reads on the heavy-components and advanced-reactor chokepoints. Further out, the Kozloduy Units 7–8 AP1000 final investment decision is targeted for the back half of the year.
