The nuclear new-build trade sold off with growth on July 7 — SMRs, enrichers and uranium down 5-10% and X-Energy -9.7% — while regulated utilities caught a defensive bid.
The nuclear basket had no strong US gainer on July 7; its top line was Japan Steel Works (JPSWY) +3.0% to $26.30 in its most recent Tokyo session, sitting at the large-forgings chokepoint — Muroran's up-to-14,000-tonne hydraulic presses, historically some 80% of the world's large nuclear forgings. The more telling signal came from the regulated power names: NextEra (NEE) +1.2% and PSEG (PEG) +1.2% were the only US green, as capital rotated out of the speculative reactor buildout and toward the operators that already sell the electrons. On a session that took the Nasdaq down 1.16% and the semiconductor ETF off more than 3%, the grid was the haven and the buildout was the funding source.
X-Energy (XE) fell 9.7% to $16.54 to lead the decline. Freshly public, it occupies the fuel-fabrication chokepoint — its TRISO-X subsidiary holds the first commercial NRC Category II fuel-fabrication license — but with no company news, the move is a de-risking of the pre-revenue reactor complex. The TF3 plant at Oak Ridge is still roughly 56% through vertical construction, and long-dated buildout stories are the first sold when rates and risk appetite turn.
The entire new-build stack fell. SMR developers — Oklo (OKLO) −7.6%, NuScale (SMR) −6.8%, Nano Nuclear (NNE) −6.5%. Enrichment and advanced fuel — Silex (SILXY) −8.2%, Lightbridge (LTBR) −7.7%, Solstice (SOLS) −8.7%, Centrus (LEU) −4.9%. Uranium miners — Uranium Energy (UEC) −6.5%, NexGen (NXE) −6.1%, Cameco (CCJ) −2.9%. Even GE Vernova (GEV) −6.5% on the large-equipment side. The resilience of the regulated utilities against the buildout names' beta is the session's structural read: the market is willing to pay for delivered power today and reluctant to underwrite reactors that turn on years from now.
Q2 earnings anchor the next month. NextEra reports July 29, Constellation (CEG) July 30, Cameco July 31 — watch the Westinghouse equity contribution — BWX Technologies (BWXT) August 3-4, Centrus August 6, and X-Energy its first full quarter as a public company on August 6. On the policy side, the DOE Reactor Pilot Program's target of three or more advanced-reactor criticalities is the concrete test of whether the buildout timeline the market just sold is genuinely slipping or simply out of favor.
