Huntington Ingalls (+4.5%) rode the defense bid to lead a mixed nuclear tape, while advanced-fuel name X-Energy (−7.0%) led SMR-complex profit-taking and utilities held.
Huntington Ingalls (HII) rose 4.5% to $291.50, leading the nuclear basket as the same defense rally that lifted the drone and space primes — sparked by AeroVironment's blowout quarter and a wave of bullish analyst initiations — flowed into naval names. HII anchors the forgings-and-components chokepoint: it is the sole builder of US aircraft carriers and one of only two nuclear-submarine yards, the heavy-forging bottleneck for naval reactors. Its gain was sector rotation into defense industrials on a weak-jobs day that pushed the Dow to a record close, not a company-specific catalyst.
The laggard was at the opposite, pre-revenue end of the fuel cycle. X-Energy (XE) fell 7.0% to $17.27 as the advanced-reactor and SMR complex gave back gains. X-Energy sits on the fuel-fabrication chokepoint — its TRISO-X line is one of the few Western paths to HALEU-based pebble fuel, and it recently secured an NRC Part 70 fuel-fabrication license and a graphite-supply deal with SGL Carbon. There was no adverse news; the move was profit-taking in a richly valued name that only IPO'd this April, caught between milestones. The platform peers echoed it: NuScale (SMR) −3.8%, NANO Nuclear (NNE) −3.5%, and Oklo (OKLO) roughly flat at −0.2%.
The rest of the tape split by chokepoint. Uranium supply was mixed — enCore (EU) −5.1% and Cameco (CCJ) −0.9% down, but Denison (DNN) +3.9%, Uranium Energy (UEC) +2.1% and NexGen (NXE) +1.9% higher — with no single directional catalyst, more relief buying in the miners than conviction in the reactor developers. Enrichment name Centrus (LEU) slipped 2.5%. The restart-utility chokepoint firmed with the broader defensive rotation: NextEra (NEE) +2.3%, Constellation (CEG) +1.2%, Talen (TLN) +1.1%, though Vistra (VST) eased 1.4%.
The near calendar is dense. The DOE Reactor Pilot Program's target of three-plus reactor criticalities carries a July 4 milestone, and Mirion (MIR) reports July 30. Earnings then cluster: Cameco on July 31 (with Westinghouse equity-contribution color), Constellation July 30, NextEra July 29, and X-Energy's Q2 on August 6 — its first full quarter as a public company. PJM's 2028/2029 capacity auction closes July 7, a direct read on the data-center-driven power demand underpinning the restart-utility names.
